How Does God Want Us to Pray?
Every Night and Day...
He wants us to obey in everything!

Scripture Verse: Psalm 61:1
“Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.

In addition to Psalm 61:1, we will look in Matthew 6 what is commonly referred to as the Lord's Prayer.
“This, then, is how you should pray:
‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on
earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also
have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil
one.

We are going to discuss the Lord's Prayer and how each aspect of the P.R.A.Y. acronym is found in it.

Praise: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name

Repent: Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

Ask: Give us today our daily bread. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the
evil one.

Yield: your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

How Does God Want Us to Pray?
Every Night and Day...
He wants us to ask Him to do great things!

God’s people ask Him to do many things. They ask Him to help them honor Him in how they live. They want Him to help them obey His laws so that when other people see how they live, they will praise God. They want Him to help them tell others about the wonderful things He has done. God’s people also ask Him to take care of their needs and worries. Every day there are many things they need. Sometimes they are worried or scared about things. They tell God about them all. They know He delights to take care of His people. They also ask God to help other people. They pray for God’s people that He would help them. They pray for God to save people who don’t trust in Jesus as their Savior. God’s people pray for everyone, even people who are mean to them. God’s people ask God to do many great things. They know that He is a very great God. Nothing is too hard for Him to do.

Scripture Verse: Psalm 17:6
“I call on you, O God, for you will answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer.”

God’s people call on God every day. He is their Heavenly Father who wants to give them what they need! They ask Him to do great things and they know that He will always answer their prayers in the best way, for He is perfectly wise and good.

How Does God Want Us to Pray?
Every Night and Day...
He wants us to confess our sins!

One thing God’s people do when they pray is confess their sins. Confessing sins means thinking of how we have disobeyed God and saying sorry to God. God wants us to think about how we’ve disobeyed Him in our hearts, like when we stay very mad at someone and won’t forgive them. He wants us to think about how we’ve disobeyed Him with our words, like when we say mean things to someone. He wants us to think about how we’ve disobeyed Him with things we have done, liking hitting someone. When we say sorry to God for these things and ask Him to help us to stop doing these things, God forgives us. When Jesus died on the cross, He took God’s forever punishment for all of His people’s sins. Anyone who trusts in Jesus as their Savior has God’s promise that He will forgive their sins --every single one of them. Isn’t that good news!

Scripture Verse: Psalm 32:5
“I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity... and you forgave the guilt of my sin.”

When we acknowledge our sins to God, it means we confess we did them. It’s easy to want to cover up our iniquities --that is our sins. We don’t like them and we don’t want to think about them. But our Bible verse tells us that God’s people confess their sins to God, instead of covering them up. And what does God do then? He forgives them! That’s very good news!

How Does God Want Us to Pray?
Every Night and Day...
He wants us to praise Him!

Prayer is talking to God and listening to Him. Prayer is a little taste of the forever happiness God’s people will have with Him in heaven. One thing God’s people do when they pray is to praise God. This means that they think about what God is like and they tell Him how wonderful He is. God’s people praise God for being their Maker. They praise Him for being all powerful and all loving. They praise Him for knowing everything and using all their sadness for good. They praise Him for being holy. Most of all, they praise Him for being their Savior. In heaven, God’s people will praise God forever and ever. They will never run out of ways to praise Him.

Scripture Verse: Psalm 103:1
“Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being praise His holy name. Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”

God’s people adore and praise God from their souls. That means, they love God in their hearts so much that they tell God and tell others just how wonderful He is. What do God’s people praise Him for? They praise Him for being holy: perfectly good and so very great! And, they praise Him for all His benefits. That is, they praise Him for all the good gifts He has given to them as their kind and loving Heavenly Father. Every day God’s people have so much to praise God for!
